Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)are a type of car that combines an electric motor with a gasoline engine. This gives you the environmental benefits of electric driving for shorter trips, with the peace of mind of a gas engine for longer journeys.
How Do PHEVs Work?
PHEVs operate in three modes:
Electric Vehicle (EV) Mode: The car runs solely on its battery, producing zero tailpipe emissions. Perfect for everyday errands and commutes.
Hybrid Mode: Once the battery is depleted, the gasoline engine kicks in and the car functions like a traditional hybrid, using a combination of electric power and gasoline for optimal fuel efficiency.
Regenerative Braking: During braking, the PHEV captures kinetic energy and converts it to electricity, recharging the battery.
PHEV Range and Fuel Efficiency
Electric Range: PHEVs typically offer an electric driving range of between 30 and 145 kilometers on battery alone. This is sufficient for most daily commutes.
Fuel Efficiency: In hybrid mode, PHEVs boast excellent fuel efficiency, often achieving combined ratings of over 8 liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km).

Environmental Benefits of PHEVs

Charging times vary depending on the battery size and charging station type. A Level 2 charger can fully charge a PHEV battery in 2-4 hours, while a standard household outlet can take 8-12 hours.
