GREATER SUDBURY
Nine thousand years ago, the Ojibwe of the Algonquin group inhabited Sudbury. Today, Northern Ontario’s biggest city, once best known as the home of The Big Nickel, has 161,531 residents who live in eight urban areas as well as in rural communities beyond city limits. Home to a large Franco-Ontarian population, Sudbury is a bilingual city with very few visible minorities compared to the rest of Canada. Eighty per cent of Sudburians speak English at home, with the remaining 16.4% speaking French. It’s also a very Christian-identified city, with eighty per cent of the populace following a Christian faith. Winter sports, hunting and fishing and regional pride define the region’s culture, and the Sudbury Theatre Centre is very well-respected.
While mining and lumber were the leading industries in the area for a very long time, the economy has shifted in recent years with a new focus on health care, education, government, business, tourism and science and technology research. There are some 330 lakes in the area, and while winters are long and cold, summers are hot and sometimes quite humid. Striking rock formations and rugged forests define the lunar landscape, and Sudbury has become an increasingly popular location for film and television production. The Inco Superstack chimney is the second tallest structure in Canada after the CN Tower.
